A periodical study conducted at the Hebrew University, led by the physiologist Dr. Horesh Dor-Haim, who directs the o2 Center of the Department of Health and Sports Medicine for the Promotion of Health and Sports Medicine, found that between the months of November and December, approximately 70% of Israelis reported that they used to exercise regularly in gyms, by fitness trainers or independently - because we trained much less than usual due to the restrictions of the Corona period, with the main victim being the population in the third age which is in the trend of a significant decrease in the frequency of training.

As a result of the reduction in training, there was an increase in weight among the exercisers, with 60% of the respondents reporting such an increase (55% in the previous study, which was relevant until the month of May) and 40% reported that they neither increased nor decreased or decreased negligibly. Among the exercisers who reported weight gain, according to the current study, it appears that half of them have so far added an average of 3.5 kg to their weight (in the previous study it turned out that they added 2 kg to their weight). In the present study, the relationship between the occupational status and the obesity indices was also examined. It turned out that even though they apparently have more free time for physical activity, people who are unemployed or remain unemployed gained more than about 800 grams on average, compared to working people.

ד"ר חורש דור-חייםThe study was conducted among 1,200 people who practiced and practice as much as possible in the framework of classes, a gym, a studio, personal training or any organized sports activity on normal days and on Corona days.

According to Dr. Dor-Haim, "These are preliminary findings, later we will publish all the data obtained in this study. Physical activity is a cure for non-communicable diseases and prevents severe morbidity from communicable diseases. Although the link between obesity and severe morbidity from the corona virus has been proven in many studies and although in Israel approximately 10,000 people die each year due to lack of physical activity, the state does not allocate adequate resources to encourage the public to be active and even restricts its steps, closing the fitness centers and not allowing the public proper alternatives. The result is irreversible damage to public health."
