Microsoft presents: a "black box" for humans

News and voila!

A 'fish eye' photo from the new camera. The camera has 128 megabytes of memory, a vibration sensor, AA batteries, an infrared sensor, and wide lenses with an angle of 132 degrees.

Researchers at Microsoft Laboratories in the UK have developed a tiny camera that aims to record the day of the person wearing it, like the black box installed in airplanes and other means of transportation. The prototype of the "Sense Cam" (sensory camera) detects any change in movement or temperature using sensors and takes a picture. The original purpose of the camera is to help people suffering from various memory problems, but it can also be used to manage a visual personal diary.

The state-of-the-art camera is currently able to take only about 2,000 photos that are saved on a memory card of only 128 megabytes. The master keyholder, Lindsey Williams, told the BBC that she originally came up with the idea to help her family members locate where they last left their keys. "It's terribly frustrating that you try to retrace your steps, so I built a device that provides a solution for this," she explains.

Although for the time being Microsoft has no intention of continuing the development of the product in the UK, they intend to test the camera on patients admitted to a hospital in Cambridge. "The camera will be able to help patients who suffer from memory loss the ability to keep a visual diary of their memories and thereby improve their quality of life," explains one of the doctors at the hospital.

The images in the camera are arranged in chronological order and can be viewed very easily and through them the user's day can be accurately recreated. The camera performs a process similar to that shown in the movie "Strange Days" (1995) in which people purchased tapes of visual experiences experienced by other people and watched them through virtual reality glasses.
