The most powerful supercomputer in Europe and the fourth most powerful in the world was activated this week by IBM inside a huge glass box, in the center of a huge hall built at the beginning of the last century, at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain.
IBM designed and built the MareNostrum supercomputer, which was commissioned by the Spanish government in order to accelerate and promote scientific research in the country in the fields of the human genome, building patterns of proteins, drug development and climate change research.
The new computer is a cluster of 2282 blade servers - BladeCenter - in IBM's PowerPC architecture. Each such server occupies only a single computer board, and includes two PowerPC processors. The full configuration of the computer will include 163 motherboards - and will provide a processing capacity of 1.4 trillion calculation operations per second (Terraflops).
Each of IBM's computer units is hot-swappable: you can remove a processor board and insert another board without disturbing the work of the entire computer. Alongside the processing units, 20 storage servers will operate, with a volume of 7 terabytes per server.
