American scientists announced yesterday that they succeeded in cloning a mule. This success proves that developments in the cloning method can make it possible to clone animals that have been difficult to reproduce up until now with the existing methods - including racehorses. The researchers, from the University of Idaho, reported that the experiment may also provide insights into cancer in humans. The study was published this week in the journal Science.

The colt was born on May 4 and "looked completely normal," according to Gordon Woods, a professor at the University of Idaho who led the study. Woods and his colleagues have been trying for years to breed a horse or mule. A mule is the offspring of a donkey and a mare. Mules are almost always barren.
