A British scientist calculated and found that there is a 67% chance of God's existence, according to the British "Guardian", quoted in the news agencies.
YNET agrees that the research findings of the scientist, Dr. Stephen Unwin, a graduate of the University of Manchester in the UK, are based on a 200-year-old mathematical formula. The formula is generally intended for predicting the chances of the occurrence of events such as the failure of nuclear power plants, by balancing the various factors that influence the occurrence of the event.
Among the criteria Unwin considered in his formula were the existence of "natural evil" - such as cancer and earthquakes - and the existing belief in God, which he claims reinforces the fact of the existence of a supreme being. Another factor weighing on the formula was the existence of "miracles".
The starting point of the study was, according to him, an assumption of a 50% chance of the existence of a higher entity versus a 50% chance that there is no such entity. The weighing of the decisive factors led to the decisive conclusion that the chance is 67%.
Enwin compiled his theory in a book called "The Probability of God: A Simple Calculation That Proves the Absolute Truth". He told the British "Guardian" that in writing the book he was interested in bridging the gap between religion and science. According to him, the question of God's existence is a question of statistics much more than a question of theology.
The statistician, who is now employed at Ohio University in the USA, said: "When I arrived in America, I was exposed to religious viewpoints that were an insult to reason - views that compete with science. I could not be sure of their correctness, because in my childhood I slept through most of my religious studies. This project was for me a journey of coming to terms with my faith."
Despite his research, Unwin claims that he himself believes 95% in the existence of God.
