In people living for a long time under heavy mental pressure - stress, strain - the body's immune system ages prematurely. In their blood, the level of the chemical substance interleukin-6 increases, as in any aging person, and this substance has a connection with the onset of heart disease, diabetes, bone thinning disease (osteoporosis) and other medical problems arising from advancing age.
A new study on this topic was done at the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus. In the course of it, interleukin-6 levels were measured in 119 elderly men and women who experienced the death of a spouse due to Alzheimer's disease and other diseases of memory loss. For six years, the same subjects took care of their sick spouses and therefore experienced considerable mental stress (stress).
It turned out that the level of the above-mentioned chemical substance in those people increased within these six years at a rate as high as four times compared to 106 people who did not take care of sick spouses, and were not in the same difficult mental states.
It was also clarified that those who experienced the stress, in the same experimental group, have difficulty coming to terms with the death of their partner, and in many cases, die six months later. "And now it is clear to us that the reason for this is the state of harassment", the researchers stated in the report on their study.
Previous studies on the weakening of the body's immune system indicated that this condition promotes the onset of the flu in those people and in cases of injuries, the wounds heal much more slowly than usual. When it comes to children experiencing severe and prolonged stress situations, even their growth process is stopped. The new study was published in the prestigious journal "Records of the Academy of Sciences" of the USA.
In another study, conducted at the University of Bergen in Norway, the details of which were published in a psychiatric research journal, it was found that there are people who suffer from depression, and the reason for this: a disruption in the metabolism mechanism, concerning B-nimethiol.
In those who suffer from depression, the researchers determined, the level of the chemical substance homocysteine, which is a by-product of the body's normal metabolism, rises considerably.
