Sunspots can disrupt power grids
A group of sunspots, 20 times the size of the Earth, is now in front of the Earth. If the sunspots release magnetic energy, this could damage the activity of satellites and power grids, warns the American space agency, NASA.
A sunspot is a kind of island where the temperature is lower relative to its surroundings and therefore it appears darker. In this area, magnetic eddies occur that are capable of releasing enormous energy. The development of sunspots occurs in cycles of 11 years. The sunspots can be seen with the naked eye from Earth, but a special filter must be used to protect the eyes.
