A huge sunspot

Avi Blizovsky

Spot number 822 this year is a huge spot. Its width from end to end is 140 thousand km, roughly the diameter of the planet Jupiter. On Tuesday of this week, Mila Zinkova of San Francisco took the photo (which appears on the NASA website) showing the spot at sunset over the Pacific Ocean. The big spots in the picture are of course seagulls, but on the left side of the picture you can see two dots. The right one is sunspot number 822.

Sunspot 822 not in giant crackling flames. So far, this explosion has not affected the Earth but it may cause changes in the coming days. The spot rotates and will be in front of us, thus increasing the chance of an eruption in the direction of the Earth.
NASA's spaceweather website will continue to report. If there are important developments - we will do it too.
