Following the approval of the procedures of the European Space Agency (ESA), Greece has now become the 16th member of the ESA. The official announcement was delivered to the agency's board on March 16 by Tegn'r, chairman of the agency's board.

Cooperation between the ESA and the Hellenic National Space Committee began in the early nineties and in 1994 Greece signed its first cooperation agreement with the ESA. This led to regular exchanges of information, the status of an associated company, joint symposia, mutual access to databases and laboratories, and research in joint projects and areas of common interest.
In September 2003, Greece submitted an official application to join the ESA. after which discussions were held in the summer of 2004, with the signing of an agreement on entry into ESA procedures by Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA's CEO - on behalf of ESA, and by Dimitri Sioufas, the Minister of Development - on behalf of the Greek government.
Greece already participates in activities in the field of communication and technology, as well as in international environmental monitoring and security initiatives.
