IBM unveiled a laptop that incorporates a fingerprint security mechanism. These new biometric capabilities simplify the protection of private personal information, financial data, websites, documents or e-mail correspondence and also save the hassle of saving passwords.
The first biometric IBM ThinkPad incorporates a fingerprint reader built into the computer, along with a security subsystem that is part of the computer itself. The ThinkPad T42's fingerprint reader is located below the arrow keys. Moving the finger over the sensor enables activation of the computer itself, protected software applications, access to secure websites or databases. The scanning process lasts a few seconds, and complements IBM's on-demand security system and the ThinkVintage technologies built into the computer.
In the new IBM computer, you can use combinations of fingerprints and passwords, or any of the security methods on its own.
Another new system in IBM laptops, presented in cooperation between IBM and Utimaco Safeware, allows to encrypt all the material stored on the hard disk, and to use a fingerprint to ensure convenient identification of the user even before the full boot. Thus, the laptop can be protected against unauthorized access, in case of loss or theft of the computer. Utimaco Safeware Easy is the first product that provides encryption of the entire hard disk, compatible with the IBM rescue and recovery system. This rescue and recovery system allows automatic archiving and immediate recovery of the entire hard disk, in order to protect against data loss in the event of a failure or crash.
T42 models with the fingerprint security mechanism will cost in the US starting at $1,699
