Comprehensive coverage

quiet flight

The deafening noise created by the jet engines of passenger planes - during takeoff and landing - will be in the not too distant future, belonging to the past. A team of engineers and scientists in the field of aviation and aircraft engineering is developing a quiet plane, which will make it very difficult to distinguish the noise of its engines against the background of normal city noises.

Behind the development project, which is defined as revolutionary, are the engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce and the aircraft giant Boeing. The British government supports the development budget. The silent engine for airplanes will come into use in 20 years. The first details about it were revealed a few days ago at the conference of the Association for Advanced Science in Dublin.

The need for quiet engines for the large jet planes has become a necessity because air traffic is growing at a rate of 3-4 percent per year and it is expected that it will create an intolerable noise problem in the vicinity of the large airports. Although, noise reduction technologies - various types of noise-absorbing acoustic systems - are currently installed near the residential areas closest to the airports. But a completely new approach to reducing engine noise will be needed.

A plane equipped with a quiet engine will have four jet engines, the size of a Boeing 767 and its maximum flight range is over 6000 km, with 250 passengers, but with a different seating arrangement.

The engines will be built inside the plane and above its body - also to transmit the noise upwards. The fuselage will be built from modern insulating materials. The nozzles of the jet will have the ability to change: they will expand during takeoff, which will reduce the exhaust speed and noise. During cruising, in flight, the noise is not a factor - the jet nozzles will then be closed to provide drag and high fuel utilization.

Scientists from the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA (MIT) participate in the project.
