A number of start-up companies around the world are currently working on new technologies that could in the future replace the way we store information on our computer, our cell phone or any other electronic device.

The company NanoMagnetics from England, for example, is currently working on a technique to insert a magnetic component into a protein called ferritin, which is produced from animals. The result is proteins with a magnetic field that are able to flip so that one side represents 1 and the other side represents 0, the basic units needed to store digital information.

Companies that create memory storage devices such as hard drives and memory cards regularly report financial losses, high production costs make these companies look for newer, more efficient and cheaper technologies.

The 'Nanochip' company from California is currently working on developing a hard drive that uses a special method to heat silicon to store information. A macroscopic arm moves over a piece of silicon, the arm is able to heat a tiny spot in the silicon to a temperature of 600 degrees Celsius, when the silicon heats up it changes its molecular structure and thus the number 0 is recorded, when it cools back the point is recorded as the number 1. IBM is also currently working on Development of similar technology.

Advertisement A company called ZettaCore has recently developed a special and complex molecule which is able to "hold" a certain number of electrons and release them on command at different current intensities. In this way each molecule can represent 4 bits of information, in contrast to today's memory chips, which are only able to represent 2 bits at any given moment. The most prominent advantages of ZettaCore's method are lower production costs and a higher capacity of memory on a given area.

There is no doubt that the world of information storage is currently facing a major revolution, the demand from the companies that manufacture the memory chips to produce more efficient and cheaper chips is pushing the technology forward in directions that are hard to describe today.
