Who said physics is a difficult subject? In a survey conducted among physicists around the world, experts ranked the basic equation 2=1+1 as one of the most important equations of all time. The simple equation won more votes than more original equations formulated by great scientists like Paul Dirac and Max Planck. It was ranked eighth, only two places behind Albert Einstein's E= mc squared.

The magazine "Physics World" asked its readers, experts in the fields of physics, to rank their favorite formulas and equations according to their degree of elegance and their importance to research in the field in which they are engaged.

First place went to the equations of James Clerk Maxwell and Leonard Euler. Maxwell's equations united the fields of electricity and magnetism, previously considered unrelated. Euler's equation was described by one of the readers as "the most important mathematical theorem ever written" and it contains in one formula all the basic elements of mathematics.

Newton's second law of motion came in third place, Pythagoras' theorem in fourth place, and Schrödinger's equation, one of the fathers of quantum mechanics, in fifth place. Some scientists who participated in the poll chose equations that they formulated themselves.

Richard Harrison of Calgary, Canada was among the voters in the equation 2=1+1. "I know that other equations have contributed more and express a more comprehensive knowledge of the world, but one must also recognize the beauty of the simplest equations," he said, adding that this was the first equation he taught his son. "He pointed with the index finger of both hands and I remember the moment of wonder when he realized that the two fingers, separated by his body, could unite in his mind into one idea. We adults lose this wonder. We think of the equations as just another work tool."
