Robert's Quartet

Avi Blizovsky

The European Southern Observatory in Chile (ESO), operated by the European Space Agency, recently published a spectacular high-resolution image of Robert's Quartet, a group of four different galaxies located about 160 million light-years from Earth. The group members are NGC 87 (top right), NGC 88 (middle), NGC 89 (bottom) and NGC 92 (left).
Robert's Quartet is one of the best examples of a compact galaxy group, containing 4-8 galaxies each, interacting with each other from time to time. One galaxy in the group, NGC 87 contains a large glowing region of star formation due to interactions with its neighbors.
