A Soyuz spacecraft that brought with it three new crew members to the space station docked at the station this morning, after a two-day journey from Earth.
The Soyuz spacecraft was launched into space on the night between Thursday and Friday from the Russian launch base in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.
In the spaceship are three astronauts making their way to the International Space Station. Russian cosmonaut Sergei Kryklav and American cosmonaut John Phillips are expected to stay on the station for six months, while Italian cosmonaut Roberto Vittore will return in 10 days with the current crew members.
The spacecraft carrying the three is expected to arrive at the International Space Station in about two days.
One of the main tasks of the new team will be to receive the space shuttle at the station after more than two years of hiatus.
Kryklav was on the Mir space station during the breakup of the Soviet Union and it took many months and international cooperation to rescue him. He also later spent a long time on one of the first crews of the International Space Station. At the end of the current mission, he will accumulate more seniority in space than any other person so far: over 800 days.
