Soon we will lock our car doors or operate various devices using an "electric current" that will flow to the locking or operating device through the skin. The German company Ident said that it has developed a "communication system" for transmitting information through the skin. It has several prototypes in which the transmission of the electrical current required to operate the devices is indeed weak, but passes through the skin.
One of these systems will be incorporated into protective glasses of the type used by welders. An electric current will be transmitted, for example, to an electronic drilling or welding device - and it will begin to operate only after the user puts the protective glasses on his eyes.
"The body is used to transmit the signals required to open the protection switch in the work device. There is a circuit in which there is a transmitter, a conductor and a receiver - and in this case the conductor or the skin of the user, explained the CEO of the German company Peter Rosenbeck. The system operates on a very low current of only 30 nanoamperes - so that the use is completely safe. The code, transmitted by an electrical signal through the skin, will lock a car - including locking the starter, as an anti-theft measure - open doors and activate various devices.
The entire system built for this purpose is the size of a credit card. Its planned duration of operation - 3 years without charging the battery inside. The forecast for pricing: a few dollars. Car manufacturers in the US and Europe are already interested in the innovation - to create a car key that will actually also be a complete means of protection. Without such a card, the vehicle cannot be opened and it will of course include an array of personal codes to complete the protection. The German company has 16 patents for its development. Microsoft has registered a patent for the use of the human body as a data-communication network - and for operating wearable computers.
