President Bush this week signed a bill to fund research and development in the field of nanotechnology for the four years that began on October 1st. The law for research and development in the field of nanotechnology in the 21st century gives legal validity to programs and activities already supported by the national nanotechnology initiative, which is a high priority.

Even before the law came into effect, the president ordered the allocation of 849 million dollars for research and development in the field of nanotechnology, from ten federal agencies, in the current fiscal year - a 10 percent increase compared to last year.

The White House hopes that the research and development in the field of nanotechnology will break through innovative ways to detect diseases and treat them, to monitor and protect the environment, to produce and conserve energy, to build complex structures with the tiny dimensions of an electronic circuit or the size of a giant airplane. The administration expressed hope that nanotechnology will have a broad and decisive impact on many economic sectors, and that it will lead to the development of new products, businesses, jobs and industries.

Nanotechnology allows working at the atomic and molecular level, and the dimensions of the components it deals with are equal to 1/100,000 of the diameter of a human hair. Nanotechnology is not limited to the study of tiny objects, but also deals with the research and development of materials, devices and systems with physical, chemical and biological characteristics different from those of their larger counterparts.
