The dog may be the next animal to have its genome mapped. This is after the genetic sequence of the human and mouse structures is nearing completion of the mapping.
Senior US officials placed the dogs at the top of the list after arguments among scientists. The other candidates are the chimpanzees, the chickens and the bees and they are also a priority for genetic mapping.
Reading the complete genetic code of an animal will shed light on human health and well-being. But when there are so many creatures to choose from, the US National Human Genome Research Institute sought the advice of scientists from all over the world.
According to Matthew Binns from the Animal Health Fund in the South of England wrote an article in which he called for mapping the genetic sequence of dogs. The improvement of dog breeds parallels the possibility of intermarriage in an isolated human population, a rarity in the human race. Therefore there is benefit in studying the complex diseases that are difficult to measure in humans. The pro-dog lobby is led by researchers at the Fred Chison Cancer Center and the University of California, Berkeley. According to them, understanding the canine sequence will allow a better understanding of human health issues. Dogs suffer from about 400 different diseases, most of which are similar to human diseases. At least as far as dogs are concerned, it will be possible to prevent breeding so that genetic diseases can become extinct within a few generations.
