Hubble photographed a 'cousin' galaxy of the Milky Way
The sun and our solar system are embedded in a pancake of stars deep within the disk of the Milky Way galaxy.
Even from Mark, it is difficult to see the major contours of our Milky Way, with the exception of the disk. The best thing is to look out into the wider universe, and observe galaxies similar to the Milky Way in shape and structure. For example the spiral galaxy NGC 3949 photographed by Hubble.
The new image was created from data collected by the Planetary Wide Film Camera No. 2 in October 2001, from multiple exposures photographed using filters in blue light, visible light, and near-infrared light. These images were combined into one image in natural colors. The photo was published this week by the Hubble heritage team.
