Dr. Robert Gallo, was among the discoverers of the AIDS virus. In 1984, Dr. Robert Gallo from the American Institute of Health succeeded in isolating a virus in his laboratory, which he hypothesized was the cause of the disease. He gave the virus the name HTLV3, and approached the crucial experiment, following which an AIDS test kit was developed - testing the presence of blood antibodies to the HTLV3 virus in blood samples taken from AIDS patients and healthy people. Gallo was able to prove for the first time that the presence of antibodies to an isolated virus are a diagnostic indication for the detection of AIDS.
Dr. Gallo will receive the 2005 Dr. Tobi Komt-Wallerstein Science Prize in Bar-Ilan, this Wednesday, on the eve of International AIDS Day, which will be celebrated the next day all over the world.
