In a two-day debate held recently at the United Nations, the United States and other countries called on the United Nations to completely ban human cloning.
Other countries are calling to allow the cloning of stem cells for medical purposes. The US is pushing to ban cloning, but since the US presidential candidates are divided on the issue, and it received a lot of attention during the election campaign, it does not seem that the UN vote will be held before the elections that will be held on November 2nd.

The discussion was held in the legislative committee of the UN General Council, which includes representatives from all 191 member states of the organization. Costa Rica's proposal, which was supported by the US and 60 other countries, calls for a complete ban on cloning, which is described as an unethical and immoral act. The second proposal, submitted by Belgium, prohibits the cloning of humans but allows each country to decide whether to allow or prohibit "medical cloning" for research purposes.

Costa Rica's foreign minister, Roberto Tovar, says the proposal made by his country promotes human dignity. However, the Belgian diplomat Mark Padstein says that his government's proposal contributes to the unification of the companies, instead of division. Sweden, which supports the Belgian proposal, claims that "freedom of research is essential, and the research must be carried out in an ethical manner."
The UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, personally supports cloning for medical purposes - but he leaves the decision on UN policy to the member states of the organization.
