It has always been said that a dog is the most human-like of all animals, but maybe you should think about it again: the BBC reports on a new study that states that cats suffer from mental stress just like humans. The tension is usually caused by moving house, or the addition of a new member to the family. About 125 cats were examined in the study.
Dr. Daniel Gunn-Moore, from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, noted that stress manifests itself in cats in bladder problems, and in most cases, until today, the causes of the aforementioned patients were unknown. "These problems usually appeared in middle-aged male cats, cats that don't go out much and eat regularly. We believe that mental stress is actually the trigger for all of this."
Humans who suffer from stress usually find solutions such as drugs, mental therapies and the like, with cats the story is still a bit simpler; Gunn-Moore and his team of researchers recommend to anyone who comes across a cat suffering from bladder problems, or actually from mental stress, to switch to a more "wet" diet, preferably including tuna, and to drink more.
The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals welcomed the findings of the study. Spokesman Doran Graham: "We've always known that cats are extremely sensitive."
