Brazil has successfully launched its first rocket into space. The AP news agency reported that this is the first space program in South American countries. About a year ago, Brazil failed in its previous attempt to launch a rocket into space, and 21 crew members died.

In the meantime, Brazil denies the claims, made in the journal "Science" by American nuclear experts, that it is capable of producing the new nuclear reactor it built with enough enriched uranium to build six atomic bombs every year.

According to the experts, if Brazil continues to develop the reactor according to its plans, it will be able to produce 26-31 nuclear warheads by 2010 and 53-63 by 2014. The scientists added that converting the reactor's purpose to a military one would require changes to its centrifuges, but it is possible.

On Tuesday, experts from the United Nations visited the new nuclear reactor, located in the Resenda area, to try to resolve a year-long dispute between Brazil and the United Nations over the control of its nuclear facilities. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is seeking full access to the nuclear facilities to ensure that Brazil is not using uranium to produce nuclear weapons.

Brazil completely denies the findings of the article and claims that the reactor is used for energy production only, while research to develop nuclear weapons is prohibited according to the country's laws. Edson Cormato, president of Brazil's nuclear commission, said more space is needed than the country's reactor to produce uranium for nuclear weapons. "The article is not based on any scientific calculations," he said. Brazil claims that it does not allow UN experts full access to its nuclear facilities for fear of industrial espionage.
