on eclipse days

On eclipse days, my mother would insist that we purify ourselves after the eclipse. Why? The eclipse does not bode well, she explained.

Why?

In fact, first we asked why the eclipse happens?

Three factors are involved in an eclipse: the sun, the moon, and the earth. The moon revolves around the earth and the earth revolves around the sun. Of course, both the moon and the earth rotate around their axis.

Now, what happens if all three are in a straight line? Why does the eclipse happen? Assume that the sun, moon, and earth are in a straight line so that the earth blocks all the sun's rays from reaching the moon. We won't be able to see the moon. You have to remember that the moon is seen only because light from the sun reaches it. If there are no sun rays reaching the moon, we cannot see it. This is called a lunar eclipse.

Now, what happens if the moon stands between the sun and the earth? Then we will all be wrapped in darkness. This is exactly what happens during a solar eclipse. It is the most dramatic, and then it can be dark in the middle of the day.

The ancient people did not know what causes the eclipse. Think of the cavemen in ancient times. At noon today, suddenly everything gets dark, and the birds stop singing! This is exactly the way superstitions are formed in different cultures. What should be remembered about superstitions is that they are spread across all cultures and countries and originate from times when they did not know what was the cause behind a certain event. When we examine superstitions against the event today, we know that there is nothing to fear because of the natural event.

Superstitions related to the eclipse are found all over the world. Many cultures believe that a demon or dragon swallowed the sun.

In India, Rahu and Ketu are believed to play a part in the eclipse. They are supposed to be planets but they really have no existence in the solar system. They are inventions, even if beautiful, of ancient people.

In China, a dragon is believed to eat the sun during an eclipse. Therefore, they beat drums to create noise and commotion to drive away the dragon while the Japanese cover their wells so that demons under the cover of darkness do not poison the wells.

In Romania, werewolves and demons are believed to eat the sun during an eclipse. In order to scare them, they light big fires and ring church bells during the eclipse.

Sometimes, the eclipse can be used for good. In 1503, Christopher Columbus found himself stranded in Jamaica, as his ships were eaten by worms. At first the locals received them with a warm welcome, but in light of the behavior of the Spaniards and the delay of the long stay, they became hostile. When they got angry, the locals stopped the food supply to Columbus and his men.

Columbus then called a meeting of all the leaders choosing a day that he knew would have a lunar eclipse. When they arrived, Columbus told them that if they did not restore the food supply, he would raise the moon. The leaders laughed, but then Christopher Columbus said:

here!

Then the moon began to disappear. The leaders were afraid: how can a man make the moon disappear? They fell on their knees begging him to bring back the moon: for we promise to supply you with everything you need throughout your stay. Christopher Columbus made himself familiar with the gods and the moon. He left his ship again just as the lunar eclipse ended and the moon began to reappear on the horizon.

And since then, throughout his stay he had all the necessary supplies.

So, the next time there is a defect, go out and look. Just remember to wear protective glasses, because due to the darkness, the vision may be damaged.
