Raanan Dinor, Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, and François Lemoura, Director General of the European Union Commission, signed an agreement in Jerusalem yesterday for cooperation in the field of space - global navigation systems. The EU ambassador in Israel, a representative of the European Space Agency and representatives from the EU member states also participated in the signing.

Dinor stated that the agreement is the first step in Israel's entry into the European Union's Galileo project and it summarizes nearly two years of work. Dinor also added that his office intends to complete the overall move required for Israel's entry into the project by the summer of 2004.

The CEO of the Space Agency said that Israel's participation in the European Union's flagship project is proof of the high capacity of the Israeli space industry. The project is a basis for Israeli-European cooperation in the fields of space and enables the Israeli industry to integrate into the club of European space industries.

Dinor also noted that the signed agreement allows cooperation in a wide range of fields with the European Union and the European Space Agency, including industry, R&D and standardization. The agreement is a good example of the contractual system that the Ministry of Taxation is building with the aim of enabling access and market penetration. This is part of the Ministry of Trade and Industry's effort to make available to Israeli industry a wide variety of tools in addition to trade and R&D agreements.

Dinor and Lemoura concluded that the European Union, the European Space Agency and the Joint Undertaking, which is the body entrusted in Europe with the construction of the Galileo project, will hold a seminar in Israel during the month of April with the aim of bringing to Israeli industry broad information on the possibilities of integration into the project.

In addition, the CEOs agreed on the upcoming activation of the steering committee within the framework of the agreement, the purpose of which is to examine and implement cooperation within the framework of the agreement.

Raanan Dinor, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Israel sees great importance in signing the agreement, both because Israel is the second country to sign an agreement in this area with the European Union after China, and in addition, this is one of the first agreements that the European Union signs, when the 10 countries The new additions are already inside.

Background on the Galileo program
The Galileo program is the European Union's flagship program for the provision of satellite location and time services. The program is given great importance both because of the development of the knowledge-rich capabilities associated with it and because it will allow the participating companies to compete for a share of the satellite services market, a market whose value is estimated to reach tens of billions of euros within 10 to 15 years.
