"We'll be very lucky if we get to Mars in 2020," says science fiction writer Arthur C. Clark, lamenting the slowdown in space exploration.
The 85-year-old Clark spoke by phone from his home in Sri Lanka at a conference held recently at the Houston Space Center, on the 40th anniversary of President Kennedy's speech at Rice University, in which he set the goal of landing a man on the moon within a decade.
A panel of experts was hosted in the stadium at Rice University in Houston, where Kennedy spoke on September 12, 1962. Clark spoke of how Kennedy's words, which once fueled the space race, are now falling on deaf ears.
"The end of the Cold War removed the main motivation from the space race," he said. "We are reaching a stage where not a single nation, not even the United States, can do it alone. It should be a global effort.”
Clark, known for his book 2001 - A Space Odyssey, says that the cost to send humans to a space station should be $200." Concluded.
The businessman from California, Dennis Tito, who became the first space tourist when he paid 20 million dollars to fly in a Russian spacecraft to the International Space Station joked saying: Did Clark say that 200 dollars would be enough to fly into space. Can I get my money back?”

Tito said he was disappointed that An-Sync frontman Lance Bays would not be the last space tourist because his flight had inspired many young people. "I believe we will see many more civilians flying into space. The public will be able to identify more with private individuals than with professional astronauts," he said. According to him, if the cost goes down, we will see many more space flights as an integral part of the culture.
