United States - the pollution / Dr. Assaf Rosenthal

Dr. Assaf Rosenthal

If it is necessary to verify the fact that the USA is the biggest polluter in the world, then these days the report of the "Environmental Protection Agency" (EPA) is published showing how the emission of pollutants by the USA has increased

The report includes the emission of the four main polluting gases and compares the damage they would cause to the level of damage to the environment if the same amount of carbon dioxide gas ('carbon dioxide equivalents') were emitted, when in 2004 the US emitted polluting gases
They equate their "contribution" to global warming to the emission of 7 billion tons of carbon dioxide.

Below are the emission data as published by the "Agency".

Methane – 61.4 million tons of CO2 equivalent (10%) methane
N02 – 8.2 millions of tonnes CO2 equivalent (2%) nitrous oxide
HFCs, PFCs and SF6 + 52.2 millions of tonnes CO2 equivalent (57%)
CO2 + 982.7 million of tonnes CO2 equivalent (20%) carbon dioxide
Overall + 965.4 millions of tonnes CO2 equivalent (16%) total

It can be seen that the emission of methane and nitrogen dioxide did indeed decrease, this was due to better treatment in landfills, but the total increased, that is: between 1990 and 2004, the emission level of the USA increased by 16%, while in other Western countries / Europe is doing to reduce emissions subject to the Kyoto Convention. In Great Britain, emissions decreased by 14% and in Western Europe to a similar extent. Now, there are those who see the rise in oil prices as a blessing in disguise, since the increase in prices will require an increased effort to find substitutes
and to develop alternative energy sources.

On the other hand, in order to moderate the increase in prices, the President (Bush) ordered - among other measures, to also ease and flex the regulations to prevent pollution in the refineries... that is, to allow the emission of pollutants above the accepted standards so that the next report will show a further increase in the "contribution" of the US to the damage which continues to pollute our environment.
Millions throughout the world suffer from extreme weather phenomena and ironically, in recent times such suffering has been the share of US residents when the direct connection between: emission of pollutants - global warming and extreme weather phenomena is becoming clear. More and more researchers agree that warming has an immediate (dangerous/harmful) effect and it is the one that causes or at least contributes to these phenomena. Scientists "on behalf of the government and the polluting industry" are still trying to deny the obvious connection, thus giving backing to a polluting policy like the one I opened: United States-pollution.
