A new bypass surgery method will allow better blood flow to the heart

The method, implemented at Assuta Petah Tikva Hospital, uses a larger number of separate arterial blood supply sources for the heart, as opposed to the common method that relies on only one arterial source, on which most of the heart's activity depends. The method can be applied to most patients.

A group of heart surgeons from Assuta, in collaboration with the Medical Imaging Institute at Sheba, will present an advanced method for performing bypass surgery at the annual conference of the Israel Cardiology Association. The method, known as "multiple independent arterial sources in bypass surgery", may take the place of the existing method for performing bypass surgery. Today, the right thoracic artery is usually severed from its place and its origin is connected to the left artery. An "arterial tree" is obtained, the trunk of which is the left artery alone, and the continuation is two arterial bypasses that will feed many vessels to the heart. In the presented method, one is not satisfied with the multiple launches of arterial bypasses on the heart, but also ensures that the arteries feeding these launches will come from multiple and separate sources. The result: better backup for blood flow to the heart. In addition, with the help of the new imaging devices using the CT angio method (ECG GATED MDCT), the bypasses are shown, without the need for a complicated control catheter. The annual conference of the Israel Cardiology Association in collaboration with the Israel Heart and Thoracic Surgery Association is being held on April 13-14 at the David-Intercontinental Tel Aviv Hotel.

During the year 2004, Prof. Aram Smolinsky performed 152 bypass surgeries in Asuta Hospital in patients who needed more than one bypass. The method was applied in 75% of them. After the operation, the bypasses and coronary vessels were observed in a three-dimensional demonstration, as shown in the tests conducted by Dr. Konan from the Medical Imaging Institute in Sheba. CT scan Lev, which is currently also possible at Assuta Hospital, may replace the control catheters, which are very complicated in such cases.
