The two astronauts currently living on the International Space Station are preparing for the first spacewalk of their mission.
Leroy Tsiao and Selizhan Sharifov are preparing to leave the space station tomorrow, January 26 for a spacewalk that will last five and a half hours during which they will install new equipment on the outside of the station.
Among other things, they will install a robotic experiment built in Germany, a life science research system and other scientific instruments.
The astronauts will also scan the steam vent to locate the blockage that occurred in it.
Ground controllers will monitor the performance of the space station's stabilizers in case the extra stress of the spacewalk overloads them.
During a spacewalk performed by the previous team in August 2004, the team caused three gyroscopes from the USA to stop, mainly because they were working too hard (the gyroscopes). This malfunction caused the station to lose direction for about twenty minutes.
The two, a Russian and an American, will wear Russian spacesuits identified by a red ribbon during the spacewalk.
In December, an unmanned cargo ship arrived at the space station. The two were almost forced to leave the station due to a lack of essential supplies.
Independent teams were set up to investigate how it happened that the amount of food was so reduced. and to prevent similar failures in the future.
