African elephants are capable of imitation, say researchers who have recorded elephants imitating the noises of passing trucks and the cheers of their zoo neighbors, the horses.
Malaika, a 10-year-old elephant who lives among orphaned elephants in Kenya, imitates trucks as they pass by the fence, even though the road is three kilometers away. This is what the researchers report in the British science weekly "Nature". Calimero, a 23-year-old African male who spent 18 years with two Asian females at the zoo in Basel, Switzerland, imitated the chirping sounds they made. Sound experts discovered that the frequencies of the sounds are exactly the same as those of the two elephants.
The French news agency reports that different species of birds, bats and dolphins are known for their ability to develop new vocal abilities. But with this discovery, elephants have the honor of being the first land mammals known to have developed skills like these (apart from humans). According to the authors of the study, American and Norwegian, thanks to mimicry, elephants can identify themselves with changing social groups. "It's a useful form of acoustic communication that helps maintain point-to-point connections in different social groups."
