Israel Lives. At least for now

A prestigious and influential American monthly does not foresee a rosy future for the Jewish state. 'Israel will not get to reach the age of 100'

Yoav Fromer, New York, Walla News

"Will Israel get to celebrate 100?" - So asks in the May editorial of the prestigious and influential American monthly "Atlantic". The answer to this, given in a long three-page article, is not very optimistic: it seems not.

"Atlantic" is a prestigious monthly published in the United States since 1857, and its editors include some of the most famous journalists and writers in American history. In the last issue of the journal, there is an article analyzing the options currently facing the Israelis and Palestinians, signed by one of the magazine's senior editors, Benjamin Schwartz.

Unfortunately, Schwartz states in the article that it is possible that the enmity and disagreement between the parties is so deep that negotiations will never succeed in bringing about a real solution, especially in the main issues of dispute.

In addition to this, Schwartz, who is incidentally a Jew himself, estimates that Israel is not expected to reach 100 years of age: "The Zionist enterprise has never been able to overcome the demographic obstacle that has troubled it since its inception. The existential needs of the Palestinian population, which has a much greater growth rate than Israel's, will oblige any future Palestinian state to try and expand, which will come at the expense of Israel and possibly Jordan as well."
