Smoking increases the risk of breast cancer among young women

ICA

A new study by the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York indicates a link between smoking and a high risk of developing breast cancer among young women. During the study, 89,835 women between the ages of 40 and 59 who took part in the National Breast Cancer Early Detection Program in Canada were examined. The women were followed comprehensively, including their lifestyle, for 16 years and at the end of it, about 4,500 cases of breast cancer were discovered. From the analysis of the results of the data collection, it emerged that the risk of getting breast cancer increases the longer the women smoked (50% higher risk), the greater the number of cigarettes (20% higher risk) and the greater the exposure to cigarette smoke (higher risk by 17%). Also, a greater risk of getting breast cancer is found in women who started smoking before their first pregnancy (13% higher risk). The research conclusions unequivocally indicate that smoking cigarettes has an effect on increasing the risk of getting breast cancer, especially when you start smoking at a young age and continue smoking for a long time. The study was published in the latest issue of the scientific journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

Miri Ziv, the director general of the Association to Fight Cancer said in response that: "The results of this study strengthen the knowledge that has been accumulating by scientists in recent decades, which proves that smoking has a direct impact on the development of various cancers such as breast cancer and not only on the development of lung or organ cancer other breathing. The study also proves that the earlier the women start smoking, the more they increase their risk of getting sick. It is important to know that every year approximately 4,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. I call on women in Israel to stop smoking, adopt a healthy lifestyle and reduce the risk of contracting this disease"
