The writer Stanislaw Lem, who became known in the world mainly for his book "Solaris", which was also adapted into a film, died in a hospital in Krakow, aged 84. A spokesman for him said that he died of heart problems related to old age. Lem is considered one of the greatest science fiction writers, even though he himself had reservations about the genre or at least most of its products. Lem was one of the most admired and beloved science fiction writers in the world. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages and have sold around 27 million copies worldwide.
In 1961 he published "Solaris", a book about a planet orbiting a pair of red and blue suns. Phenomena discovered on the surface of the planet completely undermine the human knowledge acquired so far in the sciences of physics, biology and psychology. The book was filmed twice thirty years apart in Russia and the USA: in 1972 by Andrei Tarkovsky and in 2002 by Steven Soderbergh, starring George Clooney.

His earlier book, "The Hospital of Shapeshifting", was banned from publication for eight years by the communist government, and was only published in 1956. Eight of his books have been translated into Hebrew, the most important of which are "Eden", "Star Diaries", "The Kibriada" Grotesque about the interaction between robots and humans, and of course "Solaris".

Although he is cataloged as a science fiction writer, Lem hated the definition and expressed his hostility to the genre in scathing essays and interviews. He showed extreme loathing towards Western "Science Fiction" and towards the majority of science fiction creators in the world, including the Russians. In his opinion, this is inferior, commercialized and worthless literature. His abysmal disdain caused the Science Fiction Writers Association of America to officially denounce him. Lem left behind a wife and a son.
