At least 19 people were killed and around 20 were seriously injured yesterday (Friday) at the Alcantara base in northeastern Brazil, from an engine explosion of a rocket that was accidentally ignited a few days before it was supposed to reach space. This is Brazil's third attempt to send a rocket into space. In the two previous attempts, in 1997 and 1999, the missiles were destroyed shortly after their launch due to technical problems.

Brazil's Defense Minister, Jose Viegas, said that the cause of the explosion was the accidental ignition of one of the four rocket engines. Vigas also said that most of the dead are members of the technical staff. Eyewitnesses said that the explosion was heard kilometers away as far as the town of Sao Luis. The spokesperson of the President of Brazil said, "We mourn the Brazilian space program, which is an important scientific program for our country."

About 800 people worked on the preparation of the missile whose cost is estimated at 6.5 million dollars. The rocket was supposed to transport two satellites into space. According to Brazilian officials, the missile was supposed to be ready for shipment on August 24.
