For the first time: a fortified complex from the time of King David was discovered in the Golan

Unearthed in archaeological excavations by the Antiquities Authority prior to the expansion of the settlement of Hispin, funded by the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Golan Regional Council *According to the archaeologists, "it is likely that the Goshurites, who ruled the Golan and maintained diplomatic and family ties with King David and his dynasty, operated in the citadel"

A fortified complex (possibly a citadel) from the time of the House of King David (the Iron Age, 10th-11th centuries BCE) was discovered for the first time in archaeological excavations by the Antiquities Authority in the settlement of Hispin in the Golan. The researchers speculate that the citadel was built by the Kingdom of Geshur, an ally of the Kingdom of Beth David, for regional control. The excavation is taking place in preparation for the expansion of the settlement, funded by the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Golan Regional Council, and was attended by dozens of residents of the settlements of Hisfin and Nov, as well as many youths from the pre-military preparatory schools Mentor, Kfar Hanasi, El Rum and Katsrin, and service year trainees from Sade Golan School.

According to the excavation managers, Barak Tzin and Eno Baron from the Antiquities Authority, "The compound we uncovered was built in a strategic location: it stands at the top of a small "dome" on the bank of Nahal El Al, and overlooks the nearby area, when near the location of the citadel it was possible to cross the stream from side to side, without the need to cross the deep gorge. The citadel was built of large stones (' Boulders'), its walls are about one and a half meters wide, and it surrounded the natural dome, we were surprised to discover a rare and fascinating find: a large stone, On which a decoration is engraved, in which two figures with outstretched 'horns' appear schematically. It is possible that an additional object is placed next to it."

Worship of the moon god

It is interesting to know that a similar find was discovered in 2019 on a state-ritual stele (tombstone) in Beit Tzeida, which is in the Jordan Park north of the Sea of Galilee, by the Beit Tzeida archaeological expedition led by archaeologist Dr. Rami Arab from the University of Nebraska. The tsetse was found near a gate, and near a stone platform , and on it is a description of a figure with 'horns' with hands outstretched to the side. It was identified by the researcher as worshiping the moon god. The stone from Hisfin was placed near the entrance, on a shelf, but it was carved with not one figure, but two. According to the researchers, "it is not impossible that a person who saw the impressive ritual stone in Beit Tziida, decided to create a local model, imitating the state stone."

The fortified city of Tel Beit Tziida was, according to researchers, the capital of the Aramean kingdom of Geshur, which ruled the center and south of the Golan about 3,000 years ago. It is said in the Bible that this kingdom had diplomatic and family ties with the House of David: one of King David's wives was Maacca, the daughter of Ptolemy the King of Geshur.

Cities of the Geshur kingdom are known along the Sea of Galilee, including Tel Ein Gev, Tel Hadar and Tel Surg, but in the Golan itself very few small sites from the time of the House of David are known. The unique fortified complex revives the study of the Golan during the Iron Age.

The head of the council is Haim Rokh He said "In the Golan, the glorious past of the Jewish people is combined with the present - the settlement throughout the Golan, when we look to the exciting future to come - continued growth and absorption. The residents of the Golan are the strong connection between the past, the present and the future, and they also assisted in this special excavation, in Hispin. In the Golan, there are many excavations that are in the public areas, in which the Golan residents travel and live. History is a constant testimony to this and we are proud to be a part of it from Shimura".

In coordination with the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Golan Regional Council, the construction plan will be changed, so that the citadel will not be damaged, and will be developed as an open public area on the bank of Nahal El Al, and as a place where archaeological-educational activities will be conducted.

  1. Please do not write "complex from the time of King David". Don't confuse Shelly Yachimowitz, Yair Golan, Nitzan Horowitz, Ofer Abu Kaseifa, Tami Zandberg, and more and more. After all, this land was never ours. We are an occupying nation and we need to return to the Palestinians all, all the land except for the plots on which the houses of the above-mentioned nivazim stand.

  2. Geshur was the capital of the Kingdom of Palestine.
It was run by Yasser Arafat's father, father, grandfather.
There the textbooks of the wonderful and educated Palestinian people were discovered, the law books of the Palestinian state that stretched from Kush to Shekush and the Palestinian Parliament House were discovered.
At that time, the Palestinians were the greatest thinkers and inventors in the world.
They invented electricity, the light bulb, the aircraft, the merchant navy and founded and established global terrorism.
Their inventions included remote-controlled exploding Athens and destroying the markets of other cultures.
They introduced rape as a way of life and murder in the family as a way of conduct.
Since then, all the peoples of the world have seen them as leaders and role models.
