Torah and science conference in Bar Ilan - most of the scholars except one - are religious

We would be happy for a conference that would invite at least equally religious and secular scientists

A series of controversial topics will be discussed at the tenth conference on the topic: Torah and Science at Bar-Ilan University, among the topics: archeology and the Bible: colleagues or conflicts?, the creation of the world, conflicts between Torah and science, evolution and the history of the universe. In response to a request from the website, Yifat Hirschfeld from the university speaker's office said that the archaeologist Yehuda Gobrin, who is a secular person, will speak at the morning session.
The question therefore arises, if controversial issues are raised, why not invite the haplogta bar and at most bring one person? Is it a collection of convinced people who believe that there is no point for the other side to express their position.
Since real scientific research is carried out at Bar Ilan University, there is also an intriguing question of how the religious scientists integrate the constantly updated science, even when these updates are not to their liking? We would be happy if there would be a conference that would deal with exactly the same topics but that non-religious scientists would participate in, at least on an equal basis.
And if you're looking for objective scientists, you don't have to travel far. Just a week ago, Tel Aviv University reported on a ceremony marking the centenary of excavations at Tel Megiddo. The chief researcher excavating there, Prof. Israel Finkelstein, did not hesitate to correct a wrong assumption that the fort was built in the time of David and Solomon but a century later, and therefore it does not constitute evidence that it was indeed a vast kingdom, on the contrary, it constitutes an upgrade to the status of the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel a century A year after David and Shlomo, who lost their daughter.

As a service to the public, I quote the university's announcement as follows:

"The conference will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan. Among the topics that will be discussed at the conference: conflicts between Torah and science, the creation of the world, the history of the universe, evolution, private and general supervision, criticism of biblical criticism, historical aspects, Torah and archeology, technology in the Talmud, education for Torah and science, these are some of the topics that the tenth annual conference on the subject will deal with Torah and science. The conference will be held at Bar-Ilan University, on Sunday, the 13.4.03th of Nisan, April 9, 30, in Mintz Hall, starting at XNUMX:XNUMX. The chairman of the organizing committee is Prof. Natan Aviezer from the Department of Physics."

"The highlight of the conference is the symposium that ends the day. The theme of this year's symposium is "Archaeology and the Bible: Colleagues or Conflicts?" Among the participants of the symposium, Prof. Hanan Eshel and Prof. Zeev Safrai, both from the Department of Land of Israel Studies at the university. "

"During the day there will be lectures on a wide variety of topics, including "Inaccuracy in Halacha - Necessity of Reality or Torah Law?" (by Rabbi Shabtai HaCohen Rappaport, head of the Seder Yeshiva of Shavuot Israel), "The use of scientific and technological means in establishing Halacha" (Prof. Yosef Bodenheimer, President, School of Technology - Lev Jerusalem Institute), "The polemic surrounding the book The Making of a Godol by Rabbi Natan Kaminetzky" (Prof. Ze'ev Lev, The Hebrew University), "Chemistry in Torah literature before the XNUMXth century" (Prof. Reuven Rodman, Adelphi University, New York), "Between a legitimate Midrash and a mobilized interpretation" (Rabbi Dr. Raphael Pozen, Midrash for Girls), "Has the volume of the egg changed from the time the Torah was given to the present day?" (Prof. Avraham Greenfield, Bar-Ilan University), "Knowledge in the field of science versus knowledge in the field of faith: are they different?" (Prof. Natan Aviezer, Department of Physics), and many other interesting topics."

  1. For a Torah and Science conference, people of Torah and Science should be brought.

Secular people will usually be people of science, but not people of Torah. So I see no value in bringing them to the conference.

If you have an idea for secular people who are knowledgeable in both science and Torah, let the university know and we will be happy to hear their response.

  2. Until you complain about secular scientists not coming to scientific conferences, what about the boycott of scientists who deny evolution in the United States? And when holding conferences on biblical criticism, do they invite scientists or Torah people who advocate Kasuto's view that the Torah is harmonious?
