The Ministry of Science and Technology, which is responsible for the Israeli Space Agency, intends to contact the American Space Agency (NASA) next month with a request to add a second Israeli astronaut to the space expedition. This is what reporter Ofer Petersburg reported in a news item published yesterday (Wednesday) in the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

It was also reported in "Yediot Ahronoth" that approval in principle from NASA should be received by the end of June. If the answer is positive, searches will begin for the right candidate for the complicated task. The selection process for the second Israeli astronaut will begin at the end of January 2004, and will be carried out by the Air Force and other parties. The decision regarding the nature of the scientific experiment he will conduct will be made by the Ministry of Science, in collaboration with academic institutions.
In an interview for the book "The Crash" by Avi Blizovsky and Yefa Shir-Raz, Zandberg said that the task now assigned to Israel is to preserve its position as a space power. "For this purpose, we are working to expand the interstate cooperation with regard to the launching of satellites and the cost-effective experiments of those satellites in space. These activities are carried out through joint ventures between countries, involving the business sectors, in order to promote the execution of various projects. So, for example, we turned to Brazil in order to coordinate with them an attempt to launch into low orbit satellites of Israeli entrepreneurs from Al-Cantera, Brazil's launch base near the equator."

Other goals of the Minister of Science, Modi Zandberg: developing a satellite in collaboration with France with the intention of launching it into space in 2007 (an agreement with the French government on this matter is expected to be signed in December). Israel is also preparing to launch a space telescope developed by Israel in collaboration with the Indian Space Agency. The goal plan is the center of the Deputy Director General of the Prime Minister's Office, Alex Goldengorn.
