The Israeli biotechnology company Bioshaf has announced that it has successfully completed the development of the world's first kit for the early detection of the SARS disease. The innovative assessment allows, according to the company for the first time in the world, an accurate detection of the SARS disease at any stage of the disease. The company is preparing for the production and marketing of kits worth tens of millions of dollars.
The Bioshop company announced yesterday that it has successfully completed a series of clinical trials in the laboratories of the "Infectious Disease Testing Institute" affiliated to the World Health Organization - WHO (one of the 13 international centers approved for the treatment of SARS) and the "Center for Disease Control" of the Chinese Ministry of Health in Beijing Ying. The experiments, whose purpose was to test the effectiveness of an assessment for the early diagnosis of the SARS disease, were conducted on hundreds of blood samples from patients with the SARS disease and at different stages of the disease - from the first day to the 60th day after the onset of the disease. The results of the experiments show an accuracy of 97.6% when using the kit.
The Sars epidemic that broke out earlier this year, was forgotten in the summer and may increase in the winter, caused huge economic damages estimated at billions of dollars to each of the countries of the Far East and especially to China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
An assessment by the Bioshop company makes it possible to diagnose the SARS disease in about an hour by a test based on the ELISA method, the most common method in medical laboratories for identifying infectious diseases.
According to the chairman of the company, Assaf Barzani, another advantage of the assessment comes from the accuracy in diagnosing the SARS disease (already in the early stages of the disease), that is - if in the past anyone who had a fever (which could be due to any other infectious or viral disease, even simple flu) was transferred to isolation ) and thereby exposed people who did not have the disease to SARS, precisely when their immune system was weak due to another disease, thereby increasing their chances of infection - with the help of assessments it will be possible to isolate only SARS patients.
Cooperation with the Chinese authorities
The development team, led by Dr. Shaperira Shai, has been engaged in the last few months in accelerated development of the new diagnostic kit in parallel with studies conducted in research laboratories all over the world and in six biotechnology companies in China.
The experiments conducted in the laboratories of the "Infectious Disease Testing Institute" (affiliated to the World Health Organization - WHO) revealed that the diagnostic evaluation can detect the disease from the first day of the disease.
Commercial development and market expansion
The Bioshop company is currently preparing for the commercial development of the kit and will soon begin mass production of kits and their marketing to the health authorities in East Asian countries.
Another advantage of the kit, apart from its medical benefits, stems from the fact that the health authorities do not need to invest additional resources in building an infrastructure that will allow the use of the kit. This significantly reduces the expenses of all authorities in preventive medicine at sites where the disease is most dangerous, such as airports and crossings between countries.
The company is currently negotiating with the Canadian Ministry of Health in order to receive blood samples from the SARS patients in Canada. The biggest fear of transferring the blood samples is infection with the disease and even another outbreak of it, but with the completion of the experiments with great success, there is great optimism among all the parties.
In later stages, the kit will be marketed to pharmacies and will be accessible to the general public at affordable prices.
SARS vaccine
The Bioshaf company operated in China throughout the development period with the cooperation and assistance of the Tafnet Communications company under the management of Haim Shafrir. The two companies - Tefanit and Bioshaf will cooperate with leading biotechnological companies in China in order to distribute the kits throughout China.
Bioshaf and Tafnet are currently conducting advanced talks with the Chinese authorities to establish a joint venture to develop a vaccine against the Sars disease. All parties in the joint venture will invest a total amount of 30-20 million dollars. The bulk of the investment will be financed by medical corporations linked to the Chinese government.
