For about 40 years, Prof. Rami Abtalion, from the Faculty of Life Sciences at Bar-Ilan University, has been researching fish with the aim of tapping into the human immune system • Thanks to his research life's work and his scientific discoveries in the field of immunology, which include a revolutionary cloning of tilapia fish, Prof. Abtalion was awarded the Medal of the Association for Immunology •
The Israeli Association for Immunology has chosen to award Prof. Rami Abtalion from the Faculty of Life Sciences at Bar-Ilan University a certificate of appreciation for his impressive achievements in immunology research, on an international scale.
Prof. Abtalion is one of the founders of immunological research in Israel, and among the leaders of the field in the international community. He founded, back in the 60s, the laboratory for fish genetics and immunology at Bar-Ilan University. In his many years of research in the fish laboratory, he focused on the immune system of different fish species, with the aim of deducing from it the activity of the immune system in general.
The Israeli Society of Immunology chose to give Prof. Abtalion the signal mainly thanks to an important finding in which he discovered for the first time that the antibody response to an external stimulus is two-stage - in the first stage, an immune memory is created, and only after that is the signal given to the second stage of the creation of the antibodies themselves. Beyond the importance of the findings for the study of the immune system of fish, this discovery contributed to the understanding of the sequence of important events of the immune system also regarding mammals including humans and enabled further research in the field.
Another impressive achievement was credited to Prof. Abtalion who developed, in his laboratory at Bar-Ilan University, cloned strains of tilapia fish, which are used for theoretical and applied research in genetics and fish immunology, using a unique technique.
