11 years after they set out on their journey, a flock of ducks is expected to arrive in the coming days at a safe beach in New England in the eastern United States.
The ducks' journey, which included crossing three oceans, freezing temperatures and storms - made them real stars in the academic world.
But the ducks and their friends - frogs, beavers and turtles - are not real: they are all toys made of rubber, which fell from a ship that was on its way from China to Seattle in the western United States.
The toys left for the Pacific Ocean, swam along the coast of Alaska and reached the Barnig Straits. Five years later they were spotted near Iceland. In 2001 they were in the North Atlantic Ocean, not far from the Titanic's birthplace.
Some of the 29 thousand toys went to Europe, and many of them are going to land on the shores of the United States these days. During all these years they were followed, and researchers say that they learned a lot about the currents in the oceans, following the ducks' journey.
Every year about ten thousand containers fall into the seas around the world. In recent years, similar surveillances were conducted after 3 million pieces of Lego, 34 thousand hockey gloves and 50 thousand sports shoes.
