Lovers of astronomy and celestial bodies will tonight be able to witness a spectacular sight of falling meteorites - so say astronauts. According to their predictions, dozens of meteorites are expected to pass through the sky every hour of the night. Before they fall, the meteorites will be seen in the night sky as colored streaks of light.
The appearance of meteorites as streaks of light in the sky occurs when dust from comets disintegrates upon entering the Earth's atmosphere. When comets orbit close to the Sun, they begin to evaporate, leaving behind a trail of gases and stardust. As the Earth moves in its orbit through this trail, there is a "rain" of meteorites.
The meteorites, which originate from the constellation Perseus, are among the fastest meteors and the speed of their impact in the atmosphere reaches 60 km per second. A similar vision is expected this year also in the month of November.
