The CERN Council announced on Friday (24/9/2021) the election of Professor Eliezer Rabinovitch as its 24th President starting in January 2022. He will replace Dr. Ursula Basler, who is completing her three-year term. CERN, located in Geneva, is the world's largest center for particle accelerator research. The international center employs hundreds of leading physicists from around the world, who perform scientific experiments in particle accelerators and study the theoretical aspects of particle physics. There are 23 member states in the organization, of which Israel is the only member state that is not from Europe. Israel joined the organization as a full member in December 2013, after many years of participating only as an observer.
Professor Rabinovitch is a leading and respected researcher at the Rakkh Institute of Physics of the Hebrew University and chairman of the Institute des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES). He received his doctorate in high energy physics from the Weizmann Institute in 1974. Rabinovitch has been a senior researcher at the Hebrew University since 1977, and was the head of the Rakah Institute for Physics between 2005-2012.
"It is a great honor to be elected and be the president of the CREN Council, an organization where the desire to create knowledge for the benefit of all humanity and the international cooperation of all the world's leading researchers meet. I am proud and excited to lead the most advanced research in the world with the world's leading researchers," said Prof. Rabinovitch.
"Prof. Rabinovich is a brilliant theoretician in the most advanced fields of research. During my years as president, I often had the opportunity to debate with Professor Rabinovitch, whose advice and contributions were always very helpful in conducting the ongoing discussions. I am sure that the council appoints an excellent president, whose concern for science is of the utmost importance," said Dr. Basler.
Prof. Asher Cohen, president of the Hebrew University, also congratulated Prof. Rabinovitch: "We are happy and proud of the election of Professor Eliezer Rabinovitch as president of CREN. The election of Professor Rabinowitz as president of such an important international institution is a certificate of honor for the country, the Israeli academy and the Hebrew University."
