Shira Ben Dor and Maya Nava, who represented Israel in the Girls Mathematics Olympiad (EGMO), won silver medals in the prestigious competition.

More than 140 participants from 39 countries took part in the competition, which was held in Romania, and it was born out of the desire to encourage young women and girls to deepen their knowledge in the field, with the structure and level of difficulty similar to the International Mathematics Olympiad.

Shira Ben Dor, from Jerusalem, 17 years old, school student in Lydia, Maya Neve, 15 years old from Haifa, student at Leo Bek School. Shira and Maya are part of the mathematics team, whose members represent Israel in various competitions around the world. The team's staff was built and trained by the School of Mathematical Sciences at Tel Aviv University and Tel Aviv University for Youth.

The EGMO is designed to create a space where women and girls can reach their potential and demonstrate their talent on an international stage and encourage them to develop a career in the field. The competition gradually gained importance, and as part of the global appreciation for it, it received the support of reputed international scientific bodies. This is the first time that Israel participates in this competition.
The Tel Aviv Youth University in collaboration with the School of Mathematical Sciences took it upon themselves to hold the National Mathematical Olympiads and the training of the selected teams for competitions in the world, with the aim of providing a response to students who wish to broaden their horizons on the subject as well as with the aim of promoting the field of mathematics among youth.

  1. Without diminishing the achievement, it should be noted that a silver medal does not indicate second place, as in sports. In the science olympiads, in mathematics and physics (and maybe also in chemistry), the medal is given for the single achievement, regardless of the rest. In the girls' Olympics, anyone who got 27 points or more out of 42 options, got a gold medal and there were 13 girls with a gold medal. 17 points or more were required for a silver medal. 30 girls received a silver medal. There is still room for pride!!!
