Eradication of smoking is a possible goal; You can start in the IDF

This is what Professor Manuel Trachtenberg, head of the National Economic Council, suggests in the opening lecture at an international conference held at the Technion

"The transformation of Israel into a smoke-free country - this is a possible goal." This is what Professor Manuel Trachtenberg, head of the National Economic Council, said at the end of last week, in the opening lecture at an international conference held at the Technion, on the topic of medical design. "In this revolution, the IDF - as a station where most Israelis pass through - can have a central role," he suggested.

"In the twentieth century, a huge revolution took place in the field of medicine, which extended the human lifespan and included the development of medicines and advanced medical solutions," Professor Trachtenberg added. "This revolution is the result of demand - demand for advanced medical services, and supply - advanced technological capabilities. The American Institutes of Health (NIH), which is the leading body in this field, currently enjoys a huge budget of 8 billion dollars - half of NASA's budget.

However, although science is doing well in dealing with old diseases, it has difficulty dealing with diseases resulting from modern lifestyles, especially smoking and obesity. This is why we must today put the emphasis on prevention - on fighting against harmful social habits, that is, on reducing smoking and obesity as much as possible.

"Smoking eradication is a process that requires a huge investment, but not necessarily in money but in organization and determination. The IDF, as a hierarchical body through which most young Israelis pass, is an excellent station to start this revolution. If we succeed in this, it will have a huge health benefit for the entire population."

The National Economic Council, chaired by Professor Trachtenberg, serves as an advisory body to the Prime Minister on economic issues. He explained to the conference attendees at the Technion that the council works to reduce poverty both through direct means and through the strengthening of traditional industry (low tech). "The plan we formulated, a plan that has already been approved by the government, is designed to reduce the existing dual economy in the State of Israel, an economy in which a very limited sector (high-tech) is located in a completely different place from the traditional industries. We must nurture the old industries, and the field of industrial design may be a key lever in this process," he said.

The conference at the Technion was organized by Dr. Naomi Bitterman and Professor Shlomo Mittal from the Technion, and Professor Medardo Chiapponi from IUAV, Italy.

  1. How can it be explained that people like Einstein and Churchill smoked, and contributed a lot to humanity, and survived while continuing to smoke, and passed the age of eighty, compared to Hitler (his name), who liked to raise his right hand in the air, and his trembling left hand hid behind , that they will not see, and his functions were for eternity?

  2. I wonder what the powerful cigarette manufacturers will say about this initiative…. They will never let that happen.
