Researchers from Ben Gurion University offer an innovative explanation for this unique behavior of the fairy circles phenomenon: a combination of phenotypic adaptation at the level of the individual plant, by deepening the roots of the plants into more moist soil layers, and of self-organization in space at the population level
In the figure: networks with a homogeneous structure (A) differ from heterogeneous networks (B) in their ability to adapt to changes through improvisation. In networks of the first type (homogeneous), each vertex affects a limited number of other vertices. As a result, chaotic dynamics are created and the search process (exploration) does not converge to a stable state. In the heterogeneous networks, on the other hand, some of the vertices (marked as large circles) affect large parts of the network and create dynamics leading to a steady state.
