Titan's purple aura

The orange ball - Titan is surrounded by a soft purple mist

Titan with its thick, puffy atmosphere shines a soft orange color, and is surrounded by a thin halo of purple haze.
Photos taken using blue, green and red filters were used to create the bold color look. The three color images were combined together with the ultraviolet light revealing a layer of purple light in the atmosphere. The ultraviolet part of the image composition gave an oval touch to most of the outer layer, which was also blue-violet in color, as it appears in visible light.
Small particles in the upper atmosphere scatter short waves more efficiently than longer light waves or infrared waves, so the best observation of this layer is made in ultraviolet light.
The images were taken by Cassini's narrowband camera on May 5, 2005, from a distance of 1.4 million km from Titan at a sun angle of 137 degrees. Image scale is 8 kilometers per pixel.
