Summary of the CBS data:

  • In 2015, 2,607 PhD holders engaged in post-doctoral research.
  • 24.5% of PhD holders who did post-doctoral research were at the Weizmann Institute, 23.8% at the Hebrew University, 12.3% at the Technion, 12% at Tel Aviv University and Ben Gurion University (each), and 7.7% at Haifa University and Bar-Ilan (in each of them).
  • I have a third degree Strangers About 60 countries in the world have been involved in post-doctoral research in Israel. Those with foreign citizenship were, among others, from India (22.8%), China (6.9%), Germany (3.8%), the USA (3.2%), Italy (3.1%) and France (2.8%).
  • 47.6% of postdoctoral students The Israelis there were Until age 35, and only 7.1% Over 45 years of age.
  • About half of the researchers who participated in post-doctoral studies were Strangers. Lesson הStrangers בengineering and architecture stood at 53.2%, bMathematics, statistics and computer science - 62.3%, andScience physical - 75.9%.
  • 73% of the researchers who participated in post-doctoral studies received their third degree from an academic institution abroad, about a third of them were Israelis.

Like all over the world, universities and research foundations in Israel grant living scholarships to master's and third degree students, and to postdoctoral researchers. The information presented in the message refers to male and female researchers I have a third degree Israelis and strangers, who received a Post Doctorate scholarship in 2015 at one of the universities in Israel, and engaged in research within this framework. The scholarships are funded from various sources such as: research budgets of the universities or of the Planning and Budgeting Committee and research funds, and they allow the researcher to devote all his time to research, without the need to combine other work.

A postdoctoral researcher has a PhD that pays off in university research, for most In the first years after receiving the degree, and usually at a different institution than the one where he received his third degree. The research is carried out within an existing research group or accompanied by a supervisor from the academic institution. The research fields are among one of the fields of study that exist in universities.

Information about those engaged in postdoctoral research is of great importance, because it teaches about the status of higher education institutions in Israel as research institutions, among people and factors engaged in research in the world. In addition, the figure of the number of PhD holders engaged in post-doctoral research is used to calculate the estimate of the manpower engaged in research and development.[2]

In 2010, the Central Bureau of Statistics conducted the career survey of PhD holders, 2009.[3] In 2014, the Central Bureau of Statistics began to regularly receive data on researchers who completed post-doctorate studies at universities in Israel. The information in the message relies on this data. The career survey of PhD holders (2009) and the current information were commissioned and funded by the National Council for Research and Development in the Ministry of Science and Technology.

In 2015, 2,607 PhD holders engaged in post-doctoral research, a 23% increase in the number of researchers in Israeli universities compared to 2014. Number הStrangers In 2015 it increased by 3%, and they accounted for about half (49.9%) of the number of post-doctorate researchers (Table A).

In 2015, the percentage of foreigners at the institutions of the Weizmann Institute, the Hebrew University, and Bar-Ilan University was higher than the percentage of foreigners at the other institutions (Table A).

From 2009 data[3] It turns out that about a third of those with a PhD participate at least once in their career in post-doctoral research. Also, it was found that although some of thewomen among those with a third degree it is 39.2%, The rate of post-doctoral training among those with a PhD is similar between men and women (about 33%).

among the postdoctoral students The Israelis, women Paying mainly in their country of origin - Israel (47.8% in 2009 and 52% in 2015; Table B). in 2009[3] Found among the post-doctoral students The Israelis, Men Paying mainly outside their country of origin (77.4%). A similar finding was found in 2015 among postdoctoral students Strangers that were paid in Israel. 70.1% of those who pay The foreigners In Israel there were men (Table B).

As mentioned, post-doctoral studies are conducted in the first stages of the researcher's career. in 2009[3] available that the median age He was 34 years old when he received his PhD. The 2015 data shows that the age of 47.6% of the post-doctoral students The Israelis Was Up to 35, and only 7.1% were over the age of 45 (Table B).

Israeli researchers in post-doctorate according to the length of time that has passed since receiving the third degree, and the gender of the researcher

In 2015, about 76% of the researchers participated in post-doctoral studies up to 5 years after receiving the third degree - 64.6% up to 3 years after receiving the third degree. The segmentation of the length of time that has passed since receiving the third degree according to the gender of the researcher, does not reveal significant differences between the two genders, in the pattern of participation in post-doctoral studies (Table C).

It was also found that the percentage of Israeli researchers who have a PhD from abroad,[4] who participated in post-doctoral studies in 2015, increased 2.6 times compared to the percentage in 2014 - 19.6% and 7.4%, respectively (Table C). This increase in the number of Israeli researchers with PhDs from abroad was found among Israeli men (12.8 percentage points) and among Israeli women (11.8 percentage points) (Table C).

Definitions and explanations

Post-doctorate: A period of study and independent research that takes place after receiving the third degree. The person engaged in research in this framework is called a post-doctoral student.

Field of Study: The academic unit where the research was conducted. These units were classified into fields of science according to the existing classification in the CBS and used for statistical series that present data on the fields of study in universities.

Higher education for a PhD: Academic studies at education level 8, according to the 2011 ISCED classification, awarding an academic degree recognized by the Higher Education Council.

Institution of higher education - An institution that received recognition from the Council for Higher Education, was authorized to award academic degrees and that has research activity.

In 2010, the CBS carried out a survey Career of PhD holders, 2009. In the survey, the sampled were asked, among other things, about their training in post-doctoral studies in the past and at the time of the survey. The collected data includes the duration of the training in research, the location of the training, field of specialization in the post-doctorate, and sources of funding. The survey makes it possible to gauge research activity in Israel and abroad, carried out by PhD holders who were in Israel at the time of the survey.

In 2014, the CBS began collecting data on post-doctoral studies from universities in Israel. Post-doctoral research is carried out at a higher education institution authorized to award a PhD (university).
