The trigon that killed the nature lover from Australia

What was Australia up to?

Star, celebrity, alligator catcher Steve Irwin, stabbed in the chest by Stingrays, a stabbing/encounter that caused the star to lose his life. Opinions differ on the methods of action that led to his publication, but there is no doubt that within his activities he did a lot to bring nature closer to a wide public and to preserve the environment and preserve nature. There is also no doubt that his death brought to the (Israeli) media a ridiculous collection of misconceptions: "bitten by a fish" - snakes bite - not fish; "bitten by a fish" - fish are capable of biting but this is not the case; "Stung by a fish" - bees and stinging scorpions; What caused the confusion was the uniqueness of the cause of death: a stab from Trigon's tail.

The trigon belongs to the class of cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) together with a family of well-known and large predators, the shark family (which do bite to prey), meaning that hard cartilage "replaces" the bones of the skeleton. In the Dasyatidae family, there are about seventy genera and two hundred species, most of which are found in the waters of tropical regions, some in temperate regions, and a number of species in freshwater. Most of them feed on molluscs, worms and small creatures that collect on the bottom.

As with other "poisonous" fish, the poison is used for protection only, that is, to be harmed by it you have to be in (threatening) proximity, a proximity that will allow tail whipping, since the poison is smeared on nailed scales in the upper part of the trigon's tail, (in a number of species on a "thorn" that is pulled out when the tail wags). It is this "spiky" tail that gave it its English name Stingray (and probably the name causes a lot of confusion among translators and interpreters).

Violent encounters between Trigon and people are extremely rare and most of them end in great pain, pain caused by the injury as well as by the poison. In rare cases the poison (proteinaceous) causes breathing difficulties and damage to the heart rate, in Australia (where there are many injuries from marine creatures) only two deaths are known as a result of an encounter with a trigon, in both cases what caused death was the wound and not the poison, since the trigons do not attack, in order to be stung you need Step on a trigon or be very close to it.

Anyone who knows a little about the rules of behavior (in nature in general and in water in particular), every beginner diver and amateur swimmer knows that there are fish that should not be approached, the famous "catcher" was known as an unrestrained and fearless gambler, and these qualities probably led to his disaster.

According to what is known, Steve Irwin got close to Trigon, above him to the tail range and received a whipping in his chest, a whipping that penetrated the scales into his heart and caused him to bleed to death. It's a shame!
