Scientists in the Department of Applied Physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem discovered that the human skin is actually an array of tiny antennas (operating in the frequency range known as "sub-terahertz"). Based on the discovery, the researchers were able to remotely sense changes in blood pressure as well as pulse, and the degree of sweating.

The discovery and development of the sensing method was made by professors Yuri Feldman and Aharon Agrant in collaboration with PhD student Paul Ben Yishai, and my research colleagues Dr. Alexander Pozanescu and Dr. Andreas Kaduf. The discovery was based on recently published anatomical findings that revealed that the sweat ducts (the tubes that lead the sweat from the sweat glands to the pore on the skin) have a helical structure - similar to helical antennas in wireless communication systems.

According to Prof. Aaron Agrant, "the discovery motivated us to think that the similarity between the structure of the sweat ducts and helical antennas can also be expressed in their function as tiny antennas". With the help of a simple calculation, the researchers showed that coils with the dimensions of the sweat ducts will function as helical antennas at very high frequencies of hundreds of gigahertz (sub-terahertz). Based on these calculations, the researchers hypothesized that the signal returning from the skin in this frequency range would be affected by the activity level of the sweating system. In order to confirm their hypothesis, the researchers conducted a series of measurements in which they transmitted a wave beam towards the subject's palm and measured the strength of the reflected wave. The measurements were conducted in a group of subjects during the period of return to relaxation after strenuous physical activity. The measurements showed a very high correlation between the repeated signal in the frequency range between 75 and 110 gigahertz and changes in blood pressure and heart rate. The hypothesis of the researchers that the sweat ducts function as antennas turned out to be correct. It is important to note that the measurement was made when the antenna of the measuring device was about 22 cm away from the subject's palm.

The initial results of the study were recently published in the prestigious scientific journal Physical Review Letters, and received wide resonance among doctors and scientists.

The researchers state in their article that the research findings can form the basis for a primitive technology for remote sensing of various physiological and emotional parameters, and lead to the development of a variety of applications in the field of medical engineering and security technologies. However, the researchers emphasized that the research is still in its infancy, and there is a long way to go before its full significance can be realized and the full technological potential inherent in it can be implemented.

This sensing method is protected by a patent and commercialized by the Hebrew University Research Development Company.

That is your full right of course
As you know, a lot of unregistered patents are buried in all kinds of companies that broke up. Some of those inventions are definitely worth it, but this situation is part of the culture of the Hittite economy.

  2. fibonacci,
Well, I guess the name of the company is not a secret and neither is the devil herself, if the company no longer exists.
That's why I repeat and ask what it is about.
You offer to avoid discounts, but the fact that you don't reply doesn't leave me any other option. As you know, when the picture is incomplete, our mind automatically completes it.

You had a suggestion for the answer
To your second question I already answered about before that the field is much wider than the radio radiation in the field they focused on.

  4. Fibonacci:
Which of my assumptions are you talking about? I just asked questions.
Did you just happen to not answer them?

  5. Michael:
It is known that I was involved in "Mikra" in the field, I built a prototype in Mikra.
It is not by chance that technological start-ups are closed and opened according to keys
completely different than this or that technological success or achievement.
    Money is the key word.
You should learn to avoid discounts.

  6. Calm down everyone. This technology works at distances of centimeters or tens of centimeters and no more. I'm a relative expert in radio and understand how it works and it can't work remotely anymore. By the way, the RFID technology that replaces the barcode works in a similar way and is able to provide a million pieces of information stored in the tag. Another thing that seems strange to me in the article is that it says that it is as if they have now discovered that the sweat ducts are in the form of a coil (which is what makes the technology possible). From drawings of a skin section from fifty years ago I remembered that the tubes are in the form of a coil. I just looked in the Hebrew encyclopedia and confirmed it.
And one more thing - I am also relatively expert in brain waves and their measurement techniques. In my opinion, mind reading will never be possible, not even by connecting electrodes directly to the skull. What you get there is a mixing of all the brain waves that reach the scalp from many sources inside the brain - which makes it possible to measure waves typical of states of wakefulness for a year and no more than that. Even connecting electrodes in an invasive way will be far from reading minds. But never say never.

  7. Fibonacci:
If it is not published, three questions are asked:
    1. How did you find out?
    2. What exactly did you learn? (For example - what method did they work with?)
    3. Why was it not published? (Suggested answer: it turned out that the conclusions were hasty and wrong)

  8. Michael:
It went into a drawer and was not published. From what I can tell their patent does not cover the issue

  9. Fibonacci:
Since 10 years ago there was also internet, what about some relevant link?

  10. The story is much older, experiments were done in this field 10 years ago with other sophisticated methods and at greater distances

  11. The next step... developing TRICORDERS that knew how to scan these changes...

Who knows, maybe the WARP DRIVE is waiting around the corner.

I think you went a little too far with extreme science fiction.
In order to be a biological internet network, the entire sector of humanity must be on the same level of understanding - something that I don't think is simply realistic.

Sad but there will always be more people and less people...

  13. And maybe it's not as bad as it seems at first. After all, in a world where it will be possible to read and decipher thoughts, even from a distance,
There will be no resurrection for liars. The lie and the liars will then be a thing of the distant past,
Something that belongs to the childish stage of human development.
    And regarding the other thoughts
    Our "intimacy"…
We will have to learn to live in an exposed and obscure world. A world where every person will function like an independent, mobile, biological computer
Self-frequency, coded, private, instead of an email address. And all humanity will be like a biological internet network.

  14. "The ability to remotely measure physiological parameters" - sounds fantastic, until...
Until it can be measured remotely and decoded..
    Thoughts!

  15. A very interesting discovery, we'll see what else can be discovered, I believe that the body temperature will also be able to be measured - for example, snakes can detect any slight change in the body temperature of an animal in front of them, so apparently in some way they are able to sense the change in temperature resulting from a certain body .

    Kudos to the researchers.

  16. Unbelievable how smart nature is 🙂 and also the researchers in Hebrew. Well done.
So when can I attach a chief to the child's crib to check how he is doing?

  17. Really reminds a little of all kinds of 1984-like scenarios...

All in all, a wonderful discovery! Another achievement for science.

  18. "Remote sensing of various physiological and emotional parameters"
    Here we go ...

It's good, but it can also be bad and ugly.
    Anyway, well done!
