50th anniversary of Sputnik 1 - anniversary conference and salute to the history of the space program of the USSR

The conference will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Air Force House in Herzliya

The Fisher Institute for Strategic Air and Space Research will hold on Wednesday, October 10.10, a special anniversary conference to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of the first satellite - Sputnik 1, by the USSR. The event will include a unique recognition status for the veterans of the Soviet space program who immigrated to Israel, and were located by the institute as part of a special historical documentation project, which will include in-depth interviews with the space veterans.

The event will be held on Wednesday, October 10.10.2007, XNUMX, as an official event as part of World Space Week, an international initiative sponsored by the United Nations, and on the fortieth anniversary of the signing of the Outer Space Treaty by the United Nations.

The Institute is joined by the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, the Israel Space Agency and sponsors of the event, the Boeing Company from the USA, Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. and the Russian-language Israeli newspaper Vesti.

In the lecture program on the road to Sputnik - including the first exposure in Israel of historical materials that were until recently stored in Russian archives, a unique film provided by the Sergei Korolev Missile and Space Corporation - which includes color photographs of the Sputnik 1 satellite train, which have never been screened and broadcast in documentary films ;

Professor Gerald Steinberg's lecture from Bar Ilan University, on the stabilizing and balancing role of photography satellites during the Cold War;

Lecture by Dr. Fred Ortenberg from the Asher Institute for Space Research at the Technion, on the integration of up-and-coming scientists from Bera in the Technion's satellite project, and a panel of Soviet space veterans.

The Minister of Strategic Affairs, MK and Deputy Prime Minister Avigdor Lieberman will participate in the event.
